The "score chart" mentioned is just a way of displaying the current score. Like this one. The issue is that there is no history of how you got to the displayed score. A written record always takes priority of the score card. And yes, the way you described keeping score is recommended.

You can get them from Carol Joy Cole, if you really want one. They are certainly not required - but you should always keep a running score on paper.
