Each side played twice

You're right; I could have worded this more clearly.

Each player has moved twice, including the play from the opening roll (that was won by the player rolling the higher die). In other words, there were four plays altogether, the first one being the play with the opening roll that was not doublets.

To clarify further, there is no intended "trick," only a challenge. :)
