Sixth Amendment Right to a Speedy Trial

I do not know specifics in this particular case, however, the right to a speedy trial does not refer to the time from the criminal act to the trial, but the time from being officially charged with the crime to trial.
When was he officially charged? That is the day that triggers the 6th amendment. It depends on the jurisdiction. If the charging is done by grand jury, then that is the date. If it is done via a complaint than that is the official day.
Prior to official charging of the crime, the timeline is monitored by statutes of limitations. In most jurisdictions that I know of, homicide has no statute of limitation.
