As you can see no one over 40 has ever won the world championship in a match (except Botvinnik in his return matches).

I've heard it claimed that no one has won the chess world championship who didn't start learning before age 20.

http://www.chessville.com/BillWall/AgeofLearningChess.htm

is a list of some chess players and the ages at which they learned to play chess.

What skills are required to excel at chess and at backgammon?

Is there a best age to learn the skills needed to excel at Activity X? For some X's, definitely. Are chess and backgammon among them?
