8/2 is a "phantom hit." You'd certainly play 8/2* if your opponent had a blot on your 2pt, to prevent her from making a second anchor. When your opponent doesn't have a blot there, playing 8/2 is less urgent, but you still want to make the 2pt before your opponent's phantom 12-backgame causes you problems, and the fastest way to make it is to slot it.
On the other hand, playing 8/2 has an obvious downside; you might get hit. Judging the tradeoff is the hard part of this decision. Although you'd rather not get hit, your position is strong enough that you don't lose too much from most of your opponent's hitting rolls.
