I've been on the fiber train for a long time but sometimes it still just happens. I had first experience with diverticulitis with a major attack 8 years ago. If you experience that pain once you'll do most anything not to experience it again. Over the next 4 years after the first attack I had 3-4 minor flare-ups that I recognized quickly and addressed before they got bad. Then I enjoyed 4 years of nothing until Tuesday night. And unlike previous experiences -- where you have some known symptoms and the pain develops over some days -- this time it was 0-60 in nothing flat. I was hurting pretty good Tuesday at midnight but thought I'd wait till 9 am Wednesday when my GI Dr's office opened. By 5 am Wednesday I was screaming to the point the wife thought she was going to have to call an ambulance just to be able to get me off the bed. Made it to the emergency room. When the nurse asked me to rate the pain 1-10 with 10 being the worst imaginable pain I'd ever felt I responded 13 !!!!!
Anyway I survived. The real danger with diverticulitis is potentially having your colon perforate/rupture which gives you peritonitis -- then you are in critical shape with a chance to expire even if that happens while in the hospital. My brother, while still in his twenties (about 30 years ago), had his colon rupture two different times with resultant near death experiences, surgeries, colostomies for nine months both times, etc. So, I've always been acutely aware of the condition.
Since the first attack I've always been very careful with the diet and heavily on the fiber train, but I'll me even more diligent now.
