I'd recommend to check out backgammonstudio.com - lots of other backgammon learning features in addition to a game server. It has recently launched an updated playing site (called Heroes). It is indeed browser-based, so will run on all kinds of devices (mobile included).

Otherwise you could always run Windows clients via Wine on your Linux box.
