Nack, many thanks again for this.

1. In the original position, after 17 and 8 hitting and escaping 5s are duplicated. In the new position, 17 and 8 does not duplicate escaping 5s, and the hits are more dangerous to us because there are fewer checkers to escape.

2. The original position is a bit of an exception, as normally you make the outfield point over a loose hit in the inner board, unless there are other factors to consider (race & escape, additional homeboard points). What justifies the loose hit is the blot on the ace which weakens White board in a htting exchange. Remove that, and 13/9 becomes the default play.

3. In the original position we are ready to hit any returns we get after volunteering the shot and getting hit, not so in the contrasting position. Also, in the contrasting position we have more possibilities to put the pieces back together after 8/3 8/2. And 5s do not break immediately.

4. At the 6 point, we have a builder for the 5 instead of a dilly builder for the ace only. I would have made the same decision as before as I would not expect this to be such a big swing.

5. Again I made the same play as before. It is is easy to see that in the contrasting position, 18/10 8/4(2) leaves Blue with a number of difficult to clear points (16, 13, 10), while in the original position, just the 13 and 10, with an additional landing point to go to.

Bonus: The incentive for the trap plays are the additional gammons. Take away that incentive, and there is no reason to make the trap play. The big question is, when are trap plays the best way to win? I think I would have play 12 and 2 in the contrasting position, but would not have been sure. Taking some White checkers off may make the trap play right?
