I've heard this type of puzzle before (and got it first time). I heard it from Jason Lee who had given it to his discrete math class. I have a review day tomorrow for my discrete math class whose final exam is next week. I'll give it as a free play for a bonus point on the final exam and give them 10 minutes. Will let you know how many get it. My guess is 2 out of 12 with 3 others getting close.

One student got it. He did the binary in a visual way by doing something like person 1 gets drop from each wine on the left half of the board, person 2 gets drop from each wine in upper left and lower right corners, person 3 gets drop from each wine in left half of each of the 4 quadrants, ...
Bob's student was using, as a visual prop, the chessboard mentioned in the fifth paragraph here. I hadn't thought of that approach.
Hmm... the incident involved a king, a queen, a knight, and six pawns. Did the bishop get rooked?
