Daniel Murphy e-mailed me 8 or 9 hours ago, not realizing I had already posted the solution (or the Chess Finesse follow-up). Daniel wrote:
For the puzzle, I envisioned a chess board instead of vineyards, and place a bottle on each square.A drinks from the 32 bottles on White’s side of the board.
B drinks from the 32 bottles on the left side of the board. The pattern of the overlap divides the board into 4 quadrants. Similarly A and/or B’s deaths (later) identify the quadrant of the board where the poison bottle is.
In the same pattern as A and B drank from the entire board, C and D each drink from 8 bottles in each of the 4 quadrants. The resulting pattern divides each quadrant by four — we have now 16 squares of 4 squares each, E and F repeat the pattern drinking from 2 bottles in each of the 16 four-square.
