They need to be planned out sometimes. They may even be worth a little clock time if the sole goal is PR.

It is also possible that a MWC sacrifice with even a small immediate PR hit might be the best long run PR play. For example suppose score is 17a 17a with cube on 8 and you are gin to be gammoned. If opponent has 4 on the 5 point and you have 1 on his 6 point you could gain a decision at the risk of getting backgammoned. Since the BG is only a 1 in 18 chance and the BG cost compared to G cost is extremely low it might be the PR play.
