This position arose in a match between Falafel and MCG at NYMO 2016. MCG played 6/2 6/1, which XG hates. As I said, I have no magic formula for these sorts of position and I think one may just have to study many examples and develop a feel for them. Certainly it's important that the race is close and that if Blue breaks his board then a hit doesn't necessarily win instantly.
By the way, in Hickey and Storer's "Game Plan" book, there is at least one discussion of the "dangerous double jump."
