The underlying principle is that if your 1pt and or 2pt is open, and you're running off the gammon, then you should check to see if filling in the 1pt or 2pt is better than bringing your straggler closer.

The likely way to get off the gammon is to use your large die to bear in and your small die to bear off, so you have extra incentive to ensure that your small die really will bear off.
