Tardieu created a complicated formula for somewhat similar kinds of positions. His formula deals with when to play safe/bold when bearing in if you've got one or more points open in your board and the oppt has a checker on the roof. His criteria tell you whether or not it's worth leaving a direct shot to take a checker off (and gain a roll in the process).

FWIW, FT'S formula gets this one right even though this position isn't the exact type his formula is supposed to evaluate.
