I think doubling is an error not taking the clock into account and dropping gives up quite some MWC. Not knowing the exact settings (e.g. 12 seconds seems comfortable for me) and the remaining seconds I think dropping is an error unless I know my opponent is quite slow.

If your questions aims on "is is unethical to exploit shortage of time": I think if the clock i.e. time mangement belongs to the game there is nothing questionable in exploiting the time.
