what I don't understand is the part after "If I pass this cube and hope to win when my opponent times out, what do I do in the next game?"

I think time mangement is part of the game, so exploiting that is ok to me in every aspect, so dropping the cube here is o.k. You haven't forced him to run down his clock.

All further "tactics" you mentioned are clearly a lack of sportmanship and I guess 98% will agree (and the rest does exactly that).

If dropping is unfair, what about smashing the cube on the board if you know its borderline at best or reasoning for a minute when D/P is clear?
