The Correct Answer (in my opinion)

I would tell my opponent if their clock was running for no reason. Even if I ever play 'serious tournament' backgammon I'm going to tell my opponent if they forget and are just sitting there doing nothing. It just feels like common courtesy. (Now, don't be upset if I don't tell you INSTANTLY about your clock... I may be like the golfer waiting for a putt to drop for a few seconds. Although I'm sure I won't let many seconds go by. :) ) And if someone doesn't tell me, they'll catch no flack from me, despite what the rules say that they are required to (How would I know for sure they saw it?), I'd consider it my own fault.

I would play a more complicated game if I felt it would help me out due to opponent time trouble. I see no ethical conflict and wouldn't mind anyone doing so against me. I'm going to be happy if they pass a take also. Unless it's a race and they are stronger, but I'll understand. Don't get in time trouble. But against open class players, for myself, I'd lose more than I'd gain. I've done it online against equal or lower comp or moderately higher ratings. Usually I'm better off just playing my best. But some players could use it as an edge and I'm fine with that.
