There's nothing we can do to increase the number of doublets that bear off four checkers next turn, so the choice of ace must be predicated on the assumption that we'll get at least two more rolls. It's a good rule of thumb in the bearoff to fill in gaps on point n with checkers on point 2n, so my first instinct is to play 2/1, with the plan that if I then roll a 2, then at least I can fill the gap with 4/2. This should be better in the unlikely case that we get three more rolls, and at a glance, I don't think it's any worse than 4/3 if we get exactly two more rolls.
