I haven't played an ABT event, so fairly useless for me to comment. But of course I will anyway. This seems strange to me, not from the ruleset but from the explanation of the changes pdf: ### ### 1.7(i) Use of Aids - Current rule: Players must not use any aids during a match, including breaks, ... New rule: Players must not use any aids during a match, ...

This change removes the explicit prohibition against using aids during breaks. To say it differently, breaks will no longer be considered to be “during a match”. ...

This provision is simply unenforceable and it seems best that the rules not to try to police it or put players in a position where anything they do away from the board that involves backgammon places them under suspicion of violating the rules.

### ###

Me again -

How is it unenforceable? Just because it requires ethical behavior? Nothing wrong with calling penalties on yourself, similar to golf. And if you don't, and a spectator calls it out...

Using aids between matches during breaks, is not at all the same thing as using them in a break during a match. First one is fine with me, second one is not. When my online opponent types'brb' I don't use the time to pull up match equity tables, or holding game reference positions. Maybe that cup of coffee I grab is an aid, I'll work on my ethics.

No, sorry, don't be studying anything related to the state of your current match. That's cheating. If it's not in any way related, it's not an AID. Sorry to see the throw up our hands and legalize it approach. Solution to me is no long adjournments during matches. Finish before lunch or dinner. You don't have to talk bg during a pee break.

I must misunderstand this one completely. I guess in chess you can use 'seconds' and aids during breaks? So I guess it's the way of the world and I must be all wet. At least both players can study the adjourned position if I understand correctly.
