While this news is a bit disappointing, it is not surprising, and I'm glad that the situation has been officially clarified.
Whether his asking price is reasonable or not from a business perspective, I have no idea, but I'd counsel any prospective buyer to have some serious conversations with the GNU Backgammon team first. IMO, from the point of view of the BG community as a whole, the most valuable intellectual property associated with XG is its engine, and its not clear that XG is that much stronger than GNU. Judging from Wachtel's book, XG3 beta is a significant advance over XG2, but is XG3 beta in a state that someone else can pick up where Xavier left off?
In any case, if the engine is the main thing that would be lost, one ought to consider whether an even better engine could be developed by spending the $1 million differently. Maybe this will provide a good excuse for someone to take a serious look at whether ideas from AlphaZero can be adapted to BG to produce a net that can play superbackgames well.
