I mean, the reason for this play is that you are running out of checkers on high points. You only have 2 checkers on the 4 point, so if you reduce it to 1 checker, then you waste an extra pip when you roll 2 dice but only have 1 checker there (since you bear off 3 pips instead of 4). The fact that there's a gap seems irrelevant to me--there's going to be a gap no matter how you move the checkers.
