Your discussion reminded me of this Woolsey post archived on bkgm.com on which ace to play with 3 checkers trying to get off in at most two rolls. I'll bet I've used this more than any other bearoff tip as far as finding a good play. Not being an expert in bearoffs myself. Since it seems those last few checkers when roll a missing ace come up too often and need to be saved. Of course there's sometimes the play for a specific double idea as well or other specifics. In this case I'd have been looking to fill a gap or push an ace to the 4 point or 1 point and since gap fill not there and the four point doesn't work then I'd push to the the 1 point per Kit... Even though there will be 4 checkers to play.
