My comment was regarding the position, not meant to be questioning the value of the heuristic in general.

But, if I am understanding the heuristic correctly, wouldn't it say to play 3/1 in this position? If you play 3/1 you have gaps on the 2 and 3 point, with checkers on the 4 and 6 points (checkers on the 5 point aren't on point 2n, but could also be used to fill the 3 gap with a 2). If you play 4/2, you have gaps on the 4 and 1 points, with no checkers to fill the 4 gap with (although the 1 gap can be filled from the 2 point).
