I agree with you that it's better not to give candidate plays. This is one complaint I have about James Vogl's otherwise excellent book, Backgammon Super Genius Quiz. In at least one case, I was able to infer valuable information from the list of candidate plays. Even though the candidates I was seriously considering were among those listed, the absence of Candidate X and the presence of Candidate Y allowed me to deduce that plays similar to Candidate Y were likely to be better than plays similar to Candidate X.
