I guess the rules reasonably imply that both players want to win. In the scenarios you'll mention someone "donates" the points to his opponent.

In a knock-out format I can't see any advantage to the donator (let's ignore all motivations other than winning the tourney). In a swiss system tourney I can imagine if someone needs the point to be in the money and the donator can't win anything he might "donate" in exchange for whatever. I would regard this an unsportsmanlike conduct but because if done a little more subtle you wont have a real chance to prove the donation I would regard this not as illegal, but not sportsmanlike.

A similar thing in a swiss tourney: someone gives up because he cant win anymore and has a long trip back home. Illegal? not sportsmanlike?
