In Response To: "Gin position" -- definition (Timothy Chow)

Players must neither agree to end a game or match, nor alter an existing checker and cube position, nor agree on any non-random dice roll based on a negotiated settlement agreement.

That helps, thanks. Now (IMO) they just need to gin up the gin rules, so that there is a clearer distinction between gin nuances and settlements.

Many varying opinions were asserted in response to these Gin-or-not-gin problems. There were 35 messages in that thread.

Bob Koca is skilled at generating thought-provoking questions and ideas. Here are two examples.

Bob Koca: What is the reason for allowing a resignation in a non-contact position but not in a contact position?

AP: No clue. I only learned of the rule myself a few years back (maybe there has been some update since then) when I tried to resign for gammon in a tournament game when there was a tiny % chance I could get BG'd and a tiny % change I could win...the Director denied me the right to resign.

Bob Koca: There should be a rule that if a person claims a position as gin that the opponent is allowed to call the rolls for the remainder of that game.

Colin Owen: I think a toned-down version of that would be an excellent rule:

At any point during this roll calling exercise, the gin claimer - perhaps finally starting to doubt the veracity of their statement - should be allowed to lose face by terminating it, and the players resume random rolling from that point onward, the dog now quite possibly thousands of times more likely to win(!) One would also hope that any 'false gin claiming errors' were factored in to the players PR result.

Rule writers take note.
