The fourth try is cd defeated by e5. This problem illustrates what is called a Pickanniny theme. The four tries are the four possible moves by a White pawn, and the four refutations are the four possible moves by a Black pawn.

The reason for "plausible" move rather than "move" is that something like 1.Qc6+ is uniquely refuted by 1...Nxc6, but this is not considered to be interesting. Instead of "plausible," one could instead say that each check mark represents a "thematic" or "interesting" try.
