After getting so close (key, plus three c-pawn moves and e-pawn replies out of four), I should have put together the entire theme. Too bad that Nb3+ and Qc6+ (and for that matter Qd5+, Qc7+, Qc8+ and Qa6) also have a unique refutation, and that there isn't a crisp way of defining all six out of the solution, but there's only so much one can ask of the poor composer!

c3 (threatens Re5#) defeated by ef
c4 (threatens Qd5#) defeated by e6
cb (theatens b4#) defeated by ed
cd (theatens d4#) defeated by e5

Unless I'm mistaken, each of the uniquely defeated keys also have a unique mate threat. I'm not sure if that's a requirement of the Pickaninny theme or just a happy sidelight.
