Twenty years ago I played an awful lot of one-point Nackgammon on GridGammon. I would have had a better chance of making the correct play then than now.
This position looks like it could have originated from a Nackgammon game. Making the 16pt instead of the 20pt increases your outfield control and your connectivity while White is short on ammo aimed at his 5pt. You have given up your midpoint, so the 16pt is very useful because it bridges the gap between Oppt's home board and your checkers in your outfield.
Some of the best players of the 1960s and early 1970s (few of them played with an XG PR below 6.0) would have made the right play here. They frequently said, "Play it pure." "Recirculation" was a mantra. Maximize your chance of making a prime by keeping it flat, i.e., with no spares. This means you have seven checkers that could theoretically be used to extend your 4-prime from the rear to a 6-prime.
Of course, when Oppt makes his 4pt, 5pt or 7pt you have to play more safely.
You want to improve your checker play in complicated positions in which both sides have four or more dudes back? Play a lot of Nackgammon and review all games with XG.
