In Variant 2 (bottom), White has an equal number of checkers on the 8pt and 6pt.

This demonstrates the effect of what I call the "unstack duplication" theme (though the triplication of 3s is also of note in this set of positions). In the original position (above), 20/14 duplicates 13/11* and the unstacking 6/4*. In Variant 1 (below), 21/15 duplicates 13/10* and the unstacking 8/5*.

"Unstack duplication" is often a factor in various decisions of which 6 to run.
