I think what Chuck means is that we humans would expect to usually want to clear the 8 point before we clear the 7 point, so we shouldn't put the 3rd checker on the eight point. Gnubg "says" that if only we humans would stop thinking so much and simply look ahead 36x36x36x36 ... x36 turns, we'd see that some sequences are better after one play, and some better after the other and, adding all the results up, the two plays come out even.
