In addition to the outstanding analysis made by Stick, let me add the following: If you roll 43, you are very happy you played 1(2) instead of 2 1 because you can play 7/0 instead of leaving a gap in your board.
Also, after playing 1(2) if you roll 21 or 31 or 41, you can clear the 6pt and have some nice high spares for a safer bearoff.
