Monte Carlo Brackets/Results?

In Response To: Monte Carlo Brackets/Results? (Andy Bell)

I also thought that I might be able to find somewhere on the web some current news about the 2008 Monte Carlo World Championship Backgammon Tournament, you know the one I mean - the one with the most prestigious title in our game - the only annual event that claims to be a World Championship within its title - and thus dishes out the most prestigious title a bg player can obtain (in the view of at least those not involved within our game.) It's the pinnacle of backgammon as it were - the best opportunity any of us have to broaden the popularity of backgammon.

Silly me. Has Michael Stato been invited to report on this event this year? Not that I know of. Has GammonVillage been invited to send a reporter? No evidence of such as yet. Are TrueMoneygames sponsoring the event and covering it as they have in previous years? No evidence of that either. Or would sharing what's going on just be considered a waste of time because it would be an added expense with no return to the Fairmont for the organizers to bear?

Ok - I mustn't grumble, people will think I'm a sore pleb that cannot afford the entry fee and if I moan about this it just displays my unsuitability to attend such a prestigious event. Forgive me, but I thought that backgammon had left the era of being solely a rich mans pastime and is entering a new era of it being about the best players contending even if their pockets are shallow. I certainly applaud the fact that Howard Markowitz et al have been pulled in to broaden the TD Team but please forgive me for wondering if the motivation for doing this was purely to entice some North American players over. If that is indeed the case would it not make sense to cover things on a day to day basis in the hope of pulling even more Americans over next year? Or is that too much forward planning?

Really I don't think it is a lot to ask - it's the blinking World Champs of the game we play. I'm only asking to be able to know what is going on. In this era of easy communications could this not be so? Writing a blog is really not so hard a thing to do.

How low with the attendance be this year? Are they on for a record breaker?
