After making the 18 point, I like making our own 3 point rather than the 10 point.
We are expecting a exchange of hits ... we may get hit on the 9 point or we may want to hit a checker, whether after being hit or when opponent fails to make our four point. In any case, having a second inner point is beneficial and puts the opponent under pressure to bring his blots to safety.
