Good question. I'm not sure I have a full answer, but I think it's related to another position I posted recently. Namely, a gap on the 5pt is not as bad as it seems, and is much better than a gap on the 4pt. So for example, suppose we play 12/6 8/6 and White dances. If, in the variant, we roll 53, then clearing the 5pt leaves us in pretty good shape. By contrast, if, in the original position, we roll 43, then clearing the 4pt does not leave us with a good position; in fact, XG would prefer to play the ugly-looking 6/2 5/2.
