Does anyone have a rule of thumb for this sort of position?

24/18 6/5 definitely looks best. You're up in the race, have a much stronger board, quite a few of the numbers that hit if you run out to the 18 play better for White if you stay back on the 24, and White might not hit with some of his hitting numbers on the 18 because they leave you with some strong return shots from the roof. When all of these features are present, it's generally correct to run to the 18 or beyond and leave the double or triple shot.
