There is no mathematical/logical reason.

In some sports, they have "best of 5" or "best of 7" series of games/matches. Only one point can be earned per game, so the odd number ensures that there will be no ties. So the match lengths in backgammon may have been influenced by the match lengths in these other sports, even though the underlying logic does not carry over. In fact, you can still sometimes find people who, when asked about the odd match lengths in backgammon, reflexively suggest that it has something to do with avoiding tied outcomes, before they realize that that makes no sense.
