Yep, it's all part of the nonsense that goes on in bg tournaments. Like the fact that, very typically, one player can insist that a clock is used, but that his opponent cannot then also require that both use a baffle box. Or that players must do all calculations in their head, but do not have to visualise possible moves, confusing the hell out of their opponent in the process!

The practice of never playing to even scores limits the flexibility of tournaments, particularly when shorter matches are the norm. The one advantage? It possibly makes scoreboards a bit cheaper!
