I think 2 is better in several scenarios. 1) If you fall behind in the match and are at a score where the gammon values heavily favor the trailer, your cubeful equity after an opening 42 should be quite a bit higher than after an opening 31 in the first game of an 11 point match. 2) It will also good for you at GG. 3) At DMP. 4) At some level scores where the 2 cube gv's are high for both players like 4a-4a and 4a-5a. 5) With a lead in the match since giving yourself an opening 42 lowers the trailer's cubeful equity in that game.
