Because of odd/even considerations, bearing in two checkers is less important here than if there were an odd number of checkers in Blue's outer board. Playing 12/8 10/6 not only allows us to save the gammon with 44 immediately, but in general gives us a good 4 to play (with 8/4), so that's what I'd do.
