A tempo hit seems sound - the race is about even and the main objectives should be to escape the runners while contining the straggler. Clearing the midpoint addresses the first objective but does nothing to escape. By hitting loose we give fewer shots to hit the homeboard blot and escape with tempo. And since there are few covers for the blot, might as well hit with it.
