Hitting of course reduces the immediate number of return shots, and also gains considerably when Blue is missed. So hitting is surely the DMP play, but getting a second checker sent back will increase the risk of losing a gammon. I have accumulated a bunch of positions of this sort but still find them difficult. I would hit here because the upside of White missing seems so huge.
