Moving one checker from the 13 gives a slightly better race chance. I think opponent's 14 roll would give a regret but probably a small one. If opponent hits with 14 we have 4 initial gammonish shots and chance of coming in on 5 point and getting something later. It can't be too much worse than the race chance/contact chances we would have if just stay back.

Also, metastrategizing, I know this was an error that was made and it seems like a play that might not have been considered.

13/12 8/5 but I think the difference either way is small.
