"The cube isn't as valuable to the trailer in a rollish position"
The reason for the adjustment is not due to cube efficiency but instead simply due to winning chances just not being as good. The reason is there less variance in number of turns to get off. The low rolls for leader do not hurt as much and the high rolls for the leader do not help as much. For example, near the end 65 might be the same as 12 and 66, the same as lower doubles. Since it is the trailer who needs to get lucky, the lower variance hurts the trailer.
The adjustment is greater than I think what most would guess. I've experimented with this concept and in the take-pass range, going from pip vs pip to pip vs roll or roll vs pip, but with same EPCs is about a pip worse for trailer and going to roll vs roll is then about another pip worse.
For this position from gnu one sided rollout, the EPC are about 67.4 and 62.5 and about 20.5% win chance. Giving instead a pip vs roll position with those same EPC is about 23.2% and then pip vs pip is about 25.8%.
