Not enough timing to continue the backgame, and with the big doubles it's even more hopeless. Making the 16 seems to strike the right balance between maintaining contact and perhaps getting big numbers and winning the race.

13/1 5/1 is worth a look since it maintains connectivity and contact, but looks odd, plus there's no way to hold the connectivity/contact without further breaking the board.
