What about the converse: captain beats box?

We are just trying to come up with a simple and hopefully reasonable rule for our chouette.

So, based on y'all's comments, here it goes: if the box beats the captain, the box stays; if the captain beats the box, the captain takes the box.

In other words, the box decision rests solely on what happens between the box and the captain.
