FULL DISCLOSURE: I am not a backgammon teacher.
Have you tried putting a position like this in front of Gabriel? Blue is ahead in the race 6 to 4 and on roll. Every race formula that doesn't use an adjusted pipcount would say it's clear D/P since blue is up by 50% in the pipcount.
But it's not a double; cubing is such a blunder that it's a beaver. Why? All the wastage.
As for wastage in match play, maybe start with DMP and get him to understand why gammons are of no use at DMP and go from there.
