Ok, so maybe XG isn't better than us. I was playing on my iPad and after having decided on my play I hit the hint icon because I wasn't sure. To my surprise XG suggested 9, 3!

As we can see when I got back to a real computer 3 ply does indeed choose the play of 9, 3. Luckily for us a rollout brings XG around to its senses.
