When one uses the word famous in the way I'm guessing UBK meant it it means more than 'the most widely recognized name'. It means if this guy were to walk into a 'room' would people recognize him? Maybe at Moore's prime people would have been like "Hey, did you see Roger Moore is here!?" Hef had that for 50 years. He couldn't go out in public like a normal person whereas I know Roger Moore could have been standing in front of me literally talking to me in a check out line and I wouldn't have the slightest idea he was anyone. I've watched all the Bond movies so I feel fairly representative of your typical American.

The internet says Hef had (and still has to a much lesser degree) a major presence in England. I asked the two Brits I know best, one a F of ~35 yo, the other a M of ~55 yo. There was no hesitation from either when I asked if they knew who Hugh Hefner was. The answer was more like an "Of course, who doesn't?!"
