But you are clearly referring to your own experience of people, which I imagine is largely in the US of A? I have not disagreed that Hefner may have been more famous than Moore there. And I am amazed you feel that Roger Moore could have talked to you in person in everyday circumstances without your recognising him.
Regarding your two Brits, I guess that the people you know may tend to be more intelligent than average, and more likely to know such things. But just because one of them thinks that pretty well everyone should know something, it ain't necessarily so. I remember talking to Paul Lamford about a match cube decision that occurred in a late bearoff, and commenting how most players would struggle to do the sums in their head. He looked at me, surprised, saying: "It's trivially easy!" It may have been to him.
